| Profile | Girija Mirchandani | |
Whilethe torn fabric of the society is getting streched and the turbulent world is witnessing constant conflicts, the need to 'connect' at societal and individual levels is perhaps more acute than ever. there can be no better time than now to showcase works by Girija Mirchandani, an artist who underlines the goodness of human bonds that keep an individual afloat and society intact. Her works depict the intricate bond that exists between the cteator and the creation , the protector and the protected - God and his disciples ;mother and child - all bound by a thread of love and affection. There is no sense of superiority or a desire to overpower. It is about empathy and compassion. In her visual realm, there is no place for the vicious forces of evil and disharmony. Girija describes herself as an impulsive artist rather than a compulsive one. After a year at the Dehli collage of Art, in 1968, she proceeded to study further at the Baroda Collage of Art from 1969 to 1971. Girija has had the privilege of studying under eminent artists like Mohd.Shaikh, K.G.Subramanayam, Shanko Chaudhari, Jyoti Bhatt, Jeram Patel and Vinod Shah. These great artists have had a deep impact on her and laid a strong foundation, which has helped her determine her own unequivocal style. Her upbringing in Jaipur, a city known for its old havelis, has given her heightened sense of colour and imagination. The same has found reflection inher work. "I like to play with colours, she adds, I paint neither the grotesque reality nor the unpopulated landscapes." "The synergy of a harmonious existence is one's source of energy, sense of well-being, and purpose. Our ability to spiritually integrate ourselves with the world around, provides sustenance, a message that I want to spread through my works," she concludes. |
