The End of Lawyers?
Richard Susskind’s book - The End of Lawyers? Rethinking the Nature of Legal Services, is the trigger for this thought provoking discussion. Susskind predicted that 'lawyers who are unwilling to change their working practices and extend their range of services will, in the coming decade, struggle to survive'; his basic argument being that the legal profession is changing rapidly as a result of advances in information technology and pressures toward commoditization. Is the market really changing? Is it unlikely to tolerate lawyers for tasks that can equally or better be discharged by less expert people, supported by sophisticated systems and processes? Is it time for the electronic law firm, the digital courtroom, and the virtual database? Is Susskind's conclusion that 'much legal work will either be outsourced or automated, and that which remains will be distinguishable on grounds of packaging and presentation more than on expertise' true?
